If you have ever tried to order a bolt, screw, nut or washer from a drawing and found three different part numbers on three different suppliers' datasheets, you have already met the reality of fastener standards. DIN, ISO and British Standards (BS) all describe the same or similar products, but each uses its own numbering, its own tolerances and its own designation system. For anyone who buys, sells, engineers or quality-checks fasteners, being able to cross-reference these standards is a day-to-day skill.
This guide is written as a practical reference. It contains the full cross-reference table of general fastener standards covering bolts, screws, nuts, washers, pins, rivets, circlips and more — so you can look up a DIN number and immediately find the equivalent ISO or British Standard, and vice versa.
What Are DIN, ISO and British Standards?
DIN (Deutsches Institut für Normung) — the German national standards body. DIN standards such as DIN 912 (hexagon socket head cap screws) and DIN 933 (fully threaded hex bolts) are still the default specification in much of European industry, even though many have been superseded or harmonised with ISO.
ISO (International Organization for Standardization) — the international standards body. ISO fastener standards (ISO 4762, ISO 4017, ISO 4032, and so on) are increasingly the preferred specification worldwide, and many national standards have been withdrawn in favour of their ISO equivalents.
British Standards (BS) — the UK national standards. Standards such as BS 3692, BS 4168 and BS 4183 are still encountered in legacy specifications and UK-based engineering.
Over the last decades the general trend has been DIN → ISO: most DIN fastener standards now have an ISO equivalent, and in many cases the DIN standard has been withdrawn and replaced. However, the DIN number lives on in catalogues, drawings and ERP systems, which is exactly why a cross-reference table is so useful.
Important note: The table below is provided for guidance only. There are often dimensional variations between standards, and a "same-name" product in two standards may differ in head height, thread length, tolerance, chamfer or material grade. Always verify against the actual standard document or an approved supplier drawing before committing to a design or an order.
How to Use This Table
- Find the standard you know (usually the DIN number) and read across to find the ISO and/or British Standard equivalent.
- The Product column describes what the standard covers, including product grade where relevant (e.g. "product grade A", "product grade C").
- Where a standard appears with multiple ISO equivalents (for example DIN 934 → ISO 4032 / ISO 8673), the equivalents cover different variants — typically coarse and fine pitch thread versions.
- Standards with no ISO or BS entry have no direct equivalent; the DIN standard remains the governing specification.

Reading the Numbers: A Quick Orientation
The table above is long, but a few patterns make it easier to navigate:
- DIN 9xx series — bolts, screws and nuts (DIN 931, DIN 933, DIN 934, DIN 912, DIN 913–916). These are among the most commonly used fastener standards in the world.
- DIN 125 / DIN 126 / DIN 9021 / DIN 433 — plain washers in various grades and sizes.
- DIN 127, DIN 128, DIN 137, DIN 6797, DIN 6798 — spring and lock washers.
- DIN 94 — split pins; DIN 471 / DIN 983 / DIN 6799 — circlips and retaining rings.
- DIN 1 / DIN 6325 / DIN 7-series pins — parallel, taper, grooved and spring pins.
- DIN 7337 / ISO 15977–15984 — blind rivets.
- DIN 975 / DIN 976 — threaded rod and stud bolts.
- DIN 6914 / ISO 14399-4 — high-strength structural bolting for steel construction (HV system).
- DIN 933 / DIN 931 are the workhorses: fully threaded and partially threaded hex cap screws, equivalent to ISO 4017 and ISO 4014.
Why Cross-Referencing Matters in Practice
In a supply chain or engineering context, the cross-reference is not just a paperwork exercise:
- Sourcing: a supplier may stock the ISO part while your drawing calls out DIN. Knowing the equivalent lets you source without re-engineering.
- Compliance: contracts and quality plans often name a specific standard. Substituting an equivalent requires verification that dimensions, grades and tolerances actually match — the "guidance only" caveat above applies.
- Interchangeability: many DIN and ISO standards are dimensionally identical or near-identical, but some differ in real ways (thread lengths, head sizes, washer outer diameters). A cross-reference is the starting point, never the final answer.

This reference table is compiled from the TR Fastenings engineering data on general fastener standards ([trfastenings.com/knowledge-base/engineering-data/fastener-standards](https://www.trfastenings.com/knowledge-base/engineering-data/fastener-standards)). For detailed dimensional data, always refer to the standard documents themselves (available from DIN, ISO, BSI and national standards bodies) or your fastener supplier's technical datasheets.
