Ask anyone in steel construction to name a bolt standard and ASTM A325 is usually the first answer. For decades it defined the heavy hex structural bolt used in buildings, bridges, and heavy steel connections across North America — and its designation still appears on drawings, RFQs, and bolt heads today. Here's what the standard actually covers, and one important update every specifier should know.
What ASTM A325 Covers
ASTM A325 is the specification for quenched and tempered (heat treated) steel structural bolts with a heavy hex head, produced in imperial sizes from 1/2" to 1-1/2" diameter. The mechanical requirements are the heart of the spec:
- 120 ksi minimum tensile strength for diameters 1" and under
- 105 ksi minimum tensile strength for diameters over 1" up to 1-1/2"
The heavy hex head and short thread length distinguish A325 bolts from ordinary hex cap screws — the geometry follows the heavy hex structural bolt dimensional standard, giving a larger bearing surface and more unthreaded shank in the connection's shear plane.
Types Within the Standard

A325 bolts are almost never supplied alone. A structural bolting assembly pairs the bolt with:
- ASTM A563 heavy hex nuts (commonly grade C or DH)
- ASTM F436 hardened washers
- Optionally, F959 direct tension indicators for pretension verification
Installation methods — snug-tight, turn-of-nut, calibrated wrench, or tension-control — depend on whether the connection is bearing-type or slip-critical, so the joint design drives the procurement requirement, not the bolt grade alone.
Important: A325 Is Now ASTM F3125 Grade A325
In 2016, ASTM consolidated its structural bolt specifications. A325, A490, F1852, and F2280 were withdrawn and rolled into a single umbrella standard: ASTM F3125. The familiar grade lives on as F3125 Grade A325 — same mechanical requirements, same head marking, same applications.
What this means for buyers: current mill certificates will reference F3125 Grade A325. If your customer's drawing calls out "ASTM A325" alone, product certified to F3125 Grade A325 is the correct, compliant supply — but confirm the documentation wording at order stage to avoid disputes at goods receipt.
Metric and International Equivalents
The metric companion (A325M, ~830 MPa class) broadly corresponds to property class 8.8 high-strength structural bolting. In European projects, the comparable system is EN 14399 (HR assemblies, historically DIN 6914 bolts with DIN 6915 nuts and DIN 6916 washers) — similar in intent, but not a drop-in substitution without engineering approval.
The Bottom Line
ASTM A325 remains the shorthand for the standard North American high-strength structural bolt: heavy hex, heat treated, 120/105 ksi. Just remember that the paperwork has moved on — specify or accept F3125 Grade A325, order it as a matched assembly with the right nuts and washers, and align certification wording before the truck leaves the supplier.
